EVERYTHING ABOUT GYPSUM BOARD
Gypsum board, also known as drywall or plasterboard, stands out in modern construction and interior design projects for its lightness, durability, flexibility, and ease of application. It is widely used in interior wall and ceiling applications as well as in decorative designs. Thanks to its performance features such as sound and thermal insulation and fire resistance, it offers both aesthetic and functional solutions. Compared to traditional construction methods, gypsum boards are a more practical and innovative alternative preferred in the building industry.
WHAT IS GYPSUM BOARD?
Gypsum board is a building material consisting of a gypsum-based core encased between two sheets of paper. It is a lightweight yet strong material that is frequently used in modern construction and interior decoration projects. Especially in wall and ceiling applications, it offers aesthetic and functional solutions, making it a popular choice.
WHERE IS GYPSUM BOARD USED?
- Interior Walls: Gypsum board is ideal for creating partition walls or renovating existing ones. With its lightweight structure and easy application, it offers faster and more efficient solutions compared to traditional walls.
- Ceilings: It is frequently preferred in decorative ceiling designs and suspended ceiling applications, combining aesthetics with functionality.
- Floors: It offers superior performance in terms of load-bearing capacity, sound, and thermal insulation. It is an ideal solution, especially for offices, technical areas, and modern living spaces.
- Performance-Oriented Areas: Gypsum board can be manufactured to meet specific project performance requirements such as acoustic performance, moisture resistance, fire resistance, and thermal insulation.
- Architectural Decorations: For structural decorative needs such as niches, shelves, and special designs, gypsum boards offer both aesthetic and functional solutions.
HOW IS GYPSUM BOARD INSTALLED?
- Preparation: The surface must be clean, dry, and even before application. Profiles, screws, plugs, and other necessary accessories should be prepared in advance.
- Installation: The profiles that form the frame are fixed to the building elements using appropriate fasteners, taking precautions to prevent sound transmission and thermal bridging. The gypsum boards are screwed onto the frame. Horizontal and vertical joints are staggered.
- Finishing: After installation, joint gaps between boards are filled with joint tape and filler material. Then the surface is sanded smooth, and a skim coat or finishing compound can be applied. Finally, the surface can be painted or covered with wallpaper as desired.
ADVANTAGES OF GYPSUM BOARD
- Lightweight: Gypsum boards are significantly lighter than other construction materials, making transportation and installation easier, while also reducing the structural load.
- Flexibility and Design Variety: Available in different thicknesses and sizes, gypsum board offers wide design flexibility.
- Fast Installation: Thanks to its easy assembly, gypsum board saves time in construction and renovation projects.
- Sound and Thermal Insulation: Performance boards provide enhanced acoustic and thermal insulation.
- Fire Resistance: Special fire-resistant gypsum boards are available for areas where fire safety is required. For instance, Terragips offers fire-rated boards that provide up to 120 minutes of fire resistance per panel.
